Because I’ve been thinking about buying a home for so long, I know exactly what I want my house to look like. I desire a place that has three bedrooms and three bathrooms. I also need a quiet space to set up my home office in. I want a massive, walk-in closet in my master bedroom. 3 Things to Know About Buying a Vacation Home in Mexico

Elli Jokela

If you really want to feel like you are getting away when you head to your vacation home, you will want to consider purchasing a vacation home in Mexico, where the weather is great throughout the year.

#1: Know Where You Can Purchase Property

Some countries do not allow non-residents to purchase any property. Luckily, Mexico is not one of these countries. There are some restrictions on where non-residents can buy properties, though, that you need to be aware of before you start looking for properties.

If you want to purchase property near the border or the ocean, you will have to do so through a fideicomiso, which allows you to buy a property through a trust, which you have to pay to set-up and maintain.

#2: Know Why You Want to Purchase Property

Second, it is essential to know what you want to purchase a vacation property in Mexico. Do you want to use the property exclusively for yourself, family, and friends to use as a vacation destination? Do you want to purchase a property you can use for vacations and eventually move into when you retire? Do you want to purchase a property mainly to serve as a source of rental income?

You want the property to impact what type of property you purchase and where you look for property. If you want to rent the property out as vacation property, you may want to consider a property in a more touristy area. If you want to buy a house you can eventually move into when you retire, you may want to look for something in an area that is better suited for day-to-day and not just vacation life.

#3: Know the Area

Third, it is essential to not just purchase property in a random town or area where you have never spent any time. You are going to want to make sure you like the area. You should spend time in other rental properties and get to check out an area and be sure you really like the area for a vacation or as a part-time home. Don't rush the home buying process; only go through with it when you have found an area you like to live in.

When it comes to buying a home in Mexico, take your time to get familiar with buying rules, know why you want to purchase a property, and take your time to find an area you like before you start searching for a vacation home.
